What Is Deltarune?

Deltarune is an episodic role-playing game created by Toby Fox, the developer of Undertale. It is set in a parallel world with new main characters — Kris, Susie, and Ralsei — alongside returning faces from Undertale. The game features a chapter-based structure, with Chapters 1–5 currently available and Chapters 6–7 planned as free updates.

Story Premise (Spoiler-Free)

You play as Kris, a human living in a small town called Hometown. One day, Kris and their classmate Susie accidentally fall into a mysterious Dark World hidden inside the school supply closet. There they meet Ralsei, a prince who tells them about an ancient prophecy: three heroes must seal the Dark Fountains to restore balance between Light and Dark.

Each chapter takes place in a different Dark World, each with its own theme, characters, and conflicts. The story slowly reveals connections between the Light and Dark Worlds — and a mysterious figure known as the Roaring Knight.

Combat Basics

Deltarune's combat blends traditional turn-based RPG mechanics with bullet hell:

• ACT: Non-violent actions that can recruit or spare enemies.
• FIGHT: Deal damage to enemies.
• MAGIC: Spend TP to cast spells like Ralsei's healing or Susie's Rude Buster.
• ITEM: Use healing items and equipment.
• DEFEND: Reduce incoming damage and generate TP.

When enemies attack, you control a small heart (your SOUL) inside a bullet box and must dodge projectiles. Learning attack patterns is key to survival.

Deltarune vs. Undertale

Deltarune is a parallel story, not a direct sequel. You do not need to play Undertale first, but doing so adds extra context and makes the returning characters more meaningful.

• Deltarune has one ending per chapter — there is no genocide/pacifist split like Undertale, though the SnowGrave Route in Chapter 2 offers a darker alternative path.
• You control a set party rather than a lone protagonist.
• Recruiting enemies matters for Castle Town and certain late-game content.

Deltarune Chapters 1 and 2 are free to play. Chapters 3–5 were released together as a paid title on June 4, 2025. Chapter 5 was added as a free update for paid owners on June 24, 2026.

Best Order to Play

The game is designed to be played in order: Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 5. However, you can start from any chapter from the main menu. For the best story experience, play them in release order.

Beginner Tips

• Recruit enemies when possible. Spared enemies move to Castle Town and can provide items or lore.
• Stock healing items. Bosses, especially secret bosses, are challenging.
• Talk to everyone. NPCs often hint at secrets, puzzles, and optional content.
• Save often. Save points are frequent, and some decisions have consequences.
• Don't stress about routes on your first playthrough. Enjoy the story and characters.
